Chickpeas About
Wholesale Chickpea Varieties and Export
The chickpea is an indispensable legume in both Turkish and world cuisines, with a wide range of uses — from hummus to stew, from roasted chickpeas to salads. The Toprak Bakliyat chickpea group features varieties classified by calibre (grain size). Our products are selected through the sourcing network we have run since 1978, then processed and packaged at our facilities in Mersin.
Calibre and Quality
In chickpeas, quality is measured by grain size (calibre in mm); large-calibre grains are preferred for table use, while standard calibres are chosen for cooking and industrial use. Every lot passes through sieving and optical sorting lines, and foreign matter and defective grains are removed. Packaging is carried out under the ISO 22000 food safety standard.
Nutritional Value and Use
The chickpea is rich in plant protein, fibre, iron and magnesium. Soaking it in water for 8-12 hours before cooking both shortens the cooking time and makes it easier to digest. Boiled chickpeas can be frozen and used conveniently in hummus, stews and salads.
Wholesale and Export Terms
We supply our chickpea varieties in 25 kg and 50 kg sacks, 1000 kg big-bags and retail-ready consumer packs. With our buyer-specific labelling and customer-branded packaging options, we make regular shipments to more than 40 countries, chiefly in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia. Frequently Asked Questions
Calibre refers to the diameter of the chickpea grain in millimetres; for example, 9 mm calibre indicates grains too large to pass through a 9 mm sieve. Large-calibre chickpeas are preferred for table presentation, while standard calibres are chosen for cooking and industrial production.
Chickpeas should be soaked in water for 8-12 hours before cooking; this noticeably shortens the cooking time and ensures the grains soften evenly. It is recommended to discard the soaking water and cook in fresh water.
Our chickpea varieties are sold in 25 kg and 50 kg sacks, 1000 kg big-bags and consumer packs. On request, we provide private-label packaging under the buyer's own brand.
For export shipments, we prepare the required documentation, including a health certificate, certificate of origin and the analysis reports requested by the buyer's country. Every lot leaving our ISO 22000-certified facility is traceable.
